Everything you need to know about applying for an Australian student visa โ€” documents, fees, processing times, and tips to avoid rejection.

Australia remains one of the top study destinations for Indian students, with over 1,10,000 Indian students enrolled in 2024โ€“25. The Student Visa (Subclass 500) is your gateway to world-class education at institutions like the University of Melbourne, ANU, and UNSW. This guide covers everything you need to know for a successful application in 2025.

What is the Subclass 500 Student Visa?

The Subclass 500 visa allows international students to study full-time at a registered Australian education provider (CRICOS-registered). It covers school, vocational education and training (VET), higher education, English language courses, and postgraduate research.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course
  • Meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.0+ or PTE 50+)
  • Demonstrate Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) intent
  • Have sufficient financial capacity (AUD 24,505/year for living + tuition)

GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) is the most common reason for visa refusal. Your SOP must clearly explain why you chose Australia, your specific institution, and your plans to return to India after completing your studies.

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement

The GTE requirement is a subjective assessment by the visa officer. They evaluate your ties to India (family, property, job prospects), your study plans, and whether your course aligns with your career goals. A strong GTE statement addresses: why Australia, why this institution, why this course, and your post-study plans in India.

Work Rights on Student Visa

  • Up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods (from July 2023 โ€” previously 40 hours)
  • Unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks
  • Your dependants can work unlimited hours if you are studying a Masters or Doctorate
  • Work rights begin from the date your visa is granted (not course start date)

Pro Tip: Apply for your visa online through ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website. Ensure all documents are in English or officially translated. Biometrics are not required for Indian students applying for Australian student visas.

Common Reasons for Rejection

  • Weak GTE statement โ€” does not convincingly explain study plans
  • Insufficient financial evidence
  • Previous visa refusals not disclosed
  • Gaps in education not explained
  • English test scores below minimum requirements
  • Health or character issues
