The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of Canada's most valuable immigration pathways for international students. It allows you to work in Canada for up to 3 years after graduation, gaining the Canadian work experience needed for Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs.
PGWP Duration Rules (Updated 2025)

From November 2024, Masters degree graduates receive a 3-year PGWP regardless of program length โ a significant policy improvement for Indian students in 1-year Masters programs.
Eligibility Requirements
- Graduated from a PGWP-eligible DLI (most public colleges and universities qualify)
- Studied full-time for the duration of the program
- Applied within 180 days of receiving final marks
- Valid study permit at time of graduation
- Program must be at least 8 months long
- Language requirement: CLB 7 in English or French (from 2024)
Application Process
- Receive your final transcript and completion letter
- Apply online through IRCC portal within 180 days
- Pay CAD 255 application fee
- Submit biometrics if not done recently
- Receive Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR)
- Continue working on implied status while waiting
- Receive PGWP (open work permit โ work for any employer)
