A complete guide to the UK's prestigious Chevening Scholarship — eligibility, essay tips, interview preparation, and what makes a successful applicant.

The Chevening Scholarship is the UK Government's flagship international scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). It offers full funding for a one-year Masters degree at any UK university. Around 1,500 scholarships are awarded globally each year, with India being one of the largest recipient countries.

What Chevening Covers

  • Full tuition fees (no cap)
  • Monthly living allowance (£1,200–£1,400 depending on location)
  • Economy class return airfare to the UK
  • Arrival allowance
  • Homeward departure allowance
  • Thesis grant (if applicable)
  • Study materials allowance

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (India is eligible)
  • At least 2 years of work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours)
  • Bachelor's degree with minimum 2:1 equivalent (60%+ in Indian grading)
  • Apply to 3 different UK universities (all must offer your chosen course)
  • Return to your home country for at least 2 years after the scholarship
  • Not have previously received a Chevening Scholarship

The Four Chevening Essays

The application has four 500-word essays: Leadership & Influence, Networking, Studying in the UK, and Career Plan. These essays are the heart of your application. Each must demonstrate specific qualities with concrete examples from your professional experience.

ℹ️

Chevening applications for 2025–26 open in August 2025 and close in November 2025. Results are announced in April 2026. Start preparing your essays and securing university offers well in advance.

  • Quantify your impact — numbers make your achievements concrete
  • Show a clear connection between your past experience, UK study, and future goals
  • Demonstrate genuine leadership — not just management
  • Network with Chevening alumni in India for insights
  • Apply to universities that are strong in your field
  • Submit your application at least 2 weeks before the deadline
