Key tips for UK Student Visa and USA F-1 Visa applications โ what visa officers look for, common mistakes, and how to prepare.
The UK and USA are two of the most popular study destinations for Indian students, but their visa processes are quite different. Here are the most important tips for each country to maximise your approval chances in 2025.
UK Student Visa โ Top 5 Tips
UK Tip 1: Get Your CAS Number First
You cannot apply for a UK Student Visa without a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number from your university. Apply for your university place first, accept the offer, and wait for your CAS before starting the visa application.
UK Tip 2: Funds Must Be Held for 28 Consecutive Days
Your financial evidence must show the required amount (ยฃ9,207 outside London or ยฃ12,006 in London, plus tuition) held continuously for 28 days. The 28-day window must end no more than 31 days before your application date.
UK Tip 3: TB Test is Mandatory for Indian Applicants
All Indian applicants must take a tuberculosis (TB) test at an approved clinic before applying. Results are valid for 6 months. Book this early as appointments can be limited.
UK Tip 4: Check if You Need an ATAS Certificate
Students studying certain science, engineering, and technology subjects at postgraduate level need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. Check the ATAS subject list on the UK government website.
UK Tip 5: Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is ยฃ776 per year and must be paid upfront for the full visa duration. This gives you access to the NHS during your stay.
USA F-1 Visa โ Top 5 Tips
USA Tip 1: The Interview is Everything
Unlike UK and Australia, the USA F-1 visa requires a consulate interview. The visa officer makes a decision in 2โ3 minutes. Be confident, concise, and honest. Practice your answers to common questions beforehand.
USA Tip 2: Never Mention Plans to Stay in the USA
The #1 reason for F-1 visa refusal is "immigrant intent" โ the officer believes you plan to stay in the USA after your studies. Always emphasise your strong ties to India and your plans to return after graduation.
USA Tip 3: Pay SEVIS Fee Before Your Interview
The SEVIS fee (I-901) of USD 350 must be paid at least 3 business days before your visa interview. Bring the payment receipt to your interview.
USA Tip 4: Carry All Original Documents to Interview
- DS-160 confirmation page
- I-20 form from your university
- SEVIS fee receipt
- Visa application fee receipt
- All financial documents (originals)
- Academic transcripts and test scores
- Scholarship letters (if any)
USA Tip 5: Apply Early โ Slots Fill Up Fast
US consulate interview slots in India (Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Kolkata) fill up months in advance during peak season (AprilโJuly). Apply for your visa appointment as soon as you receive your I-20.
